A Wedding Menu – It Shoulda Been You

June 6, 2017 By Jittery Cook 2 Comments

So, you’re planning a wedding? Naturally you want everything to go smoothly. Your checklists have checklists and you’re getting stuff done, ticking away like mad. But sometimes, it’s what you don’t plan for that makes for an extra special event.

Two years ago I was wedding planning for one of my kids. OK, not really one of my kids, my step-son to be exact. And the very talented Karen Karpman was really planning the wedding with our lovely daughter-in-law, Cecilia. It was a magical time with memories we’ll cherish.

Today Karen planned another wedding. She’s Judy Steinberg, the mother of the bride, in Segal Centre’s Yiddish theatre musical It Shoulda Been You. It’s a roller coaster show filled with plot twists and turns. I know what you’re thinking. You don’t speak Yiddish — me neither. No matter, there are subtitles in English and French, and much of the show is in English, with French subtitles. So, no excuses! Cancel plans to visit NYC and get a taste of Broadway right here in Montreal. Karen’s role was huge and oh so entertaining.

Joanne Cutler, also part of my extended family, plays a well lubricated, lively and very funny mother of the groom, with her real life husband, Merv Middling, perfect in his role, as her on stage husband. The bride’s older sister, Rosie Callaghan, stole my heart. Her dad, Sam Stein, father of the bride, is perfect at balancing Karen’s domineering mother role. And then, there’s Albert played by Marc-André Poulin—as a clairvoyant, ready before you are, very talented wedding planner.

Kudos to the entire cast. You’re all deserving of special mention. Now it’s time to plan a JC wedding menu.
